The board of directors of the IISA comprises insurance leaders with more than 100 years of industry experience combined. These are individuals who have made significant contribution in shaping the industry in their respective positions as leaders of various insurance institutions. They bring considerable expertise and insight to the institute and will help the institute to champion higher standards, skills development and improve industry capacity as well as transform the insurance industry as a whole.
Wayne originally joined AIG in 2002 as the Regional Finance Director, AIG Africa Region and in 2007 became the Chief Operating Officer, AIG Africa. From there he moved to Dubai as the Chief Financial Officer and in 2013 moved back home as the Managing Director of AIG South Africa. His responsibilities were expanded in 2015 to include Sub-Saharan Africa and he is now the Managing Director, AIG Africa. Wayne started his financial industry career doing his articles with PriceWaterhouseCoopers before moving into their audit division at the start of 2002. He achieved his Chartered Accountancy Qualification in 1997. Wayne has strong leadership skills and is a strategist at heart. He also has the ability to inject life, drive the energy into any team he works with. When he isn't working, Wayne enjoys a game of golf or quenching his interest in nature.
Themba has over a decade's experience in the insurance industry. As Founder and Executive Director of Discovery Insure Ltd, a short-term insurance company launched in 2011. He found himself selected as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum four years later. Themba is a member of various boards of directors within the industry; he is also the Deputy Chair of South African Insurance Crime Bureau (SAICB). In 2003 he co-founded Black Insurance Professionals of Southern Africa (BIPSA). He was awarded the Green Number in 2012 (for obtaining Ten Comrades Marathon-89.9kms Medals). In 2015 he was appointed by the Minister of Transport into the National Road Safety Advisory Council whose aim is to advise the minister on combatting road fatalities in South Africa. Themba is passionate about grooming and mentoring young people to achieve their career objectives. He has worked for the likes of Rubico Consulting Services, Siemens Ltd, and Durban Metro Waste Water Services.
Brian, born in Port Elizabeth in 1949, is heavily decorated with skills and accolades in the financial industry. Including his extensive qualifications and expertise he has nearly 50 years experience in the industry. He was the professor of Insurance and Risk Management in the Wits department of economics for 25 years where he directly influenced some of the leaders in the insurance sector. He is one of only two people in the country with a doctorate in Life Assurance and is also the author of a universal textbook, Life Office Management. Brian has worked for companies like Anglo American Life, AA Life. He is the founder and former chairman of Clientele Life. Brian is a former president of the Insurance Institute of South Africa.
Heidi is a thought leader and mentor within the short-term industry. She is well represented across different respectable industry associations. She comes highly decorated with over two decades of executive management experience. She contributes to the industry by coaching and mentoring business leaders through thought leadership, expertise and relationship building.
Thokozile has 19 years experience within the short term insurance market, with experience in claims management, underwriting, sales, marketing and communications and drafting contracts. One of her key strengths is in business growth and nurturing development of skills in others, this strength is reflected in her transformational leadership qualities. Thokozile was an executive manager at Sasria SOC Ltd for ten years. She is a member of the Fire Protection Association Board of Directors and is the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Board Committee Chairperson at the Fire and Protection Association. She previously served as the head of the
education portfolio at the Insurance Institute of Gauteng (IIG) before being nominated as vice-president in 2016. In 2017 she was nominated as the deputy president of the same organisation.
Leo is a corporate executive within the risk and employee benefit insurance industry. He also has experience in the private health industry. He has been a global shareholder representative in over 12 countries within Sub Saharan Africa in his current position. Leo possesses key skills in board of directors leadership; business strategy development and execution; local content framework implementation; value add human capital development programmes; change management; mergers; acquisitions; and divestures. He has industry experience in finance, insurance and real estate. Leo is also a trustee of the Glenmib Group Pension Fund. In his spare time he enjoys traveling within the continent, running, cattle farming and spending time with family.
Viviene has been with the South African Insurance Association for more than a decade. In that time she has played various roles including Image and Reputation Manager, Motor Manager, and General Manager for Projects and Insurance Risk. She has also acquired experience and extensive knowledge in micro-insurance, consumer education and motor insurance. Viviene was also involved in the establishment of the South African Insurance Crime Bureau (SAICB). She has also worked as a financial journalist specialising in insurance.
Gerrit's career in the insurance industry spans 50 years. He has gained experience in virtually all facets of short-term insurance. He has served at executive level for several insurance entities. Gerrit was appointed as the curator for First Central Insurance Limited and is acclaimed for concluding several run-off projects successfully. He has created several new businesses allied to the short-term insurance industry. He is the chairman of Lidwala Insurance Company in eSwatini and he also serves on the Audit Committee for the Insurance Sector Education and Training Authority (INSETA). For his doctorate Gerrit explored Factors that are Critical for the Financial Success of South African Property and Casualty Insurers. He has lectured at numerous venues in the country and abroad. Gerrit has published several articles on the operational aspects of property and casualty insurance, particularly on the challenges this industry faces in the field of financial structuring and management.
Peter boasts over 20 years of financial services industry experience, both in Africa and abroad. He has a number of business interests in the claims management space, having established Repair Solutions in 2014 and subsequently expanding into other areas of the insurance value chain. Prior to setting up his own business interests, Peter held a number of senior positions in the industry including Chief Executive of Mutual & Federal; Managing Executive for Distribution at Absa Financial Services as well as Chairman of Credit Guarantee Insurance Company. Peter also spent six years in Singapore as the Regional Managing Director of Alexander Forbes Asia Pacific. Peter has served as a director on a number of insurance industry boards, including the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) as a past president.
