Membership

The IISA is the South African Qualifications Authority approved professional body that awards professional designations to qualifying individuals within the short term insurance Industry. Being an affiliated professional member of the IISA positions one in good standing and indicates that the member has undergone extensive insurance training and has acquired the necessary experience at the various levels.

In order to become a professional member of the IISA, an individual must have completed either:
  • An IISA approved qualification from a higher learning institution or
  • A higher learning institution qualification to be verified by IISA and relevant experience per level.

The IISA approved qualifications may be historic, current or foreign qualifications as recognized by IISA.

Membership Levels

Fellowship (FIISA)

This is the highest designation that an individual can obtain within the insurance profession.

In order to become a Fellow, an individual must meet the following requirements:

  • NQF Level 7 academic qualification,
  • Show progression in career, or further academic study
  • Management abilities
  • At least five years' industry experience, including one year as a practicing Associate member.

Associateship (AIISA)

In order to become an Associate, an individual must meet the following requirements:
  • NQF Level 6 academic qualification,
  • Practicing professional who identifies clients' needs and designs solutions to meet the identified needs as a generalist or specialist,
  • Provide insurance risk management service to clients,
  • At least one year's industry experience

Licentiateship (LIISA)

In order to become a Licentiate, an individual must meet the following requirements:
  • NQF Level 5 academic qualification,
  • Practicing professional who identifies clients' needs and designs solutions to meet the identified needs as a generalist,
  • Provide insurance risk management service to clients,
  • At least one year's industry experience

General members

Our membership categories were reviewed by our Professional Standards Committee and following the review, the general membership category will no longer have three different levels (Level 1, 2 and 3). All general members will now fall into one category. The following qualifications or programmes qualify members on the general membership level.
  • Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) or
  • Unisa Elements programme or
  • Inseta certificate at NQF Level 4 (60 credits) or
  • Intermediate certificate in Business Studies (ICiBS) or
  • NQF L4 programme or UNISA Introductory programme or
  • Certificate in wealth management or risk management level 4 (INSETA) or
  • Certificate in insurance (CII) or
  • FSB recognised qualification related to financial services or
  • Tertiary qualification related to the financial services sector as per the FSB list
  • Relevant 60 credit programme (INSETA)
  • FET certificate in Short Term or Long Term Insurance level 4 (FET College) 140 credits

Students

The student category is for individuals who might not yet have started any insurance study but have a matric certificate and completed the regulatory exams.
