A Fellow is capable to identify client's needs through a comprehensive risk analysis process, within a specialist insurance environment. Conduct an analysis of the practice of insurance or provide guidance or an opinion on an underwriting process, claims management, risk management, and any other practice within the practice of insurance. Provide advice on insurance related solutions. Demonstrate specialized skills in a field with the Insurance/financial services sector or related field. Demonstrate leadership skills and people's skills or leadership skills in a particular environment and understand corporate governance.

A Fellow is a practicing professional who can operate in senior management positions or in a specialist role or specialist insurance operations such as an intermediary or underwriting management agency.


Insurance qualification at NQF Level 7 or higher that has been approved by IISA or to be verified by IISA. The qualification must have at least 4 of the following subjects/modules which are mandatory knowledge areas for this designation:
  • Economics
  • Strategic management
  • Leadership
  • Management
  • Finance management for non-financial managers
  • Investment management
  • Corporate Governance
  • Marketing management

Insurance Industry Experience

  • At least seven years' industry experience, including two years as a practicing Associate member and
  • Employed within the insurance industry or related field withing the SADC region.

IISA Membership

The IISA is the South African Qualifications Authority approved professional body that awards professional designations to qualifying individuals within the insurance Industry. Being an affiliated professional member of the IISA positions one in good standing and indicates that the member has undergone extensive insurance training and has acquired the necessary experience at the various levels.

In order to become a professional member of the IISA, an individual must have completed:

  • Insurance related academic qualification
  • Experience in the insurance industry
  • Professional standards set by IISA
  • Adherence to the Continuing Professional Development requirements
  • Adherence to professional conduct
