Presented by Norton Rose: Many companies have already elected to proactively comply with POPI simply because it makes good business sense to both safeguard their reputation and to mitigate what can be substantial organisational risks, for example data breaches. We have even seen financial service authorities proactively engaging with FSPs in relation to cyber breaches and possible risk to personal information in the sector. We are noticing significant increases in data breaches and with many employees working remotely there is even more possible exposure and hackers are taking advantage of possible gaps.

Garth de Klerk, CEO of The Insurance Crime Bureau will be covering some of the latest trends encountered in the fraud, cyber and physical crime spaces. As financial services teams have been pushed into a remote working environment, due to COVID, criminals have been looking for opportunities to utilise the physical change in processes. Directly linked to the rapidly increasing economic pressure on individuals we are seeing increased cause for opportunistic crime. As organisations our systems and people need to be prepared to think differently and act dynamically to stay ahead.

At claims stage disputes frequently arise between insurers and insureds regarding the measure of the indemnity to be paid. The calculation of the indemnity payment is often a difficult one. In property insurance, reinstatement value conditions encourage the insured to reinstate the property and provide the insured with the benefit of receiving the value of new property in place of old property.
