The topic will cover the advantages mediation has over litigation, a typical mediation dispute, the interaction between mediation and negotiation skills, and how participants can further their mediation / negotiation abilities. It will also give an update on the progress of the pro-bono mediations offered to the Department of Health for Gauteng.

Trevor Frankish
Trevor is registered as a specialist in Family Medicine with the HPCSA. He has practised hospital medicine in deep rural areas, in a district hospital and in a Medicross general practice in Johannesburg.
He holds the position of Clinical Management Consultant within the Life Healthcare Group of hospitals, with input into various clinical projects and interaction with medical professional societies. His projects have included maternal and neonatal care, clinical quality measures within hospitals, emergency unit policy development and implementation and public-private partnerships.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he was appointed to coordinate the clinical response of Life Healthcare to COVID-19. He is currently involved with the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccination programme for initially for healthcare workers (the Sisonke programme) and now the vaccination campaign for the general public.
His particular interest is in the mediation of medico-legal disputes. He is a Branch Councillor for the Gauteng branch of the SA Medical Association and member of SAMA's Alternate Dispute Resolution Working Group. He serves as Chair of the Mediation Committee of the SA Medico-Legal Association (SAMLA) and has obtained the SAMLA/UCT certificate in Foundations of Medico-Legal Practice. He heads up the SAMLA pilot project in mediation of medico-legal claims which have been instituted against the Gauteng Department of Health: it is the experience of this project that he will share during this webinar, as well as lessons learned from trying to introduce formal mediation processes within Life Healthcare.

AndrÃƒÂ© is a senior counsel, specialising in commercial law, employment law, intellectual property, administrative law, sports law, professional indemnity claims and property law.
He has completed courses in mediation at the Graduate School of Business, Stellenbosch and at Harvard University. He has mediated disputes, some of great complexity, in a number of widely diverse spheres of law and business. He also owns, with his wife, the Riverside Retirement Village in Hout Bay. He is extensively involved in community upliftment work, being one of the founders of the Horses for Causes charity fundraiser, Chairman of the Denis Goldberg Legacy Foundation Trust and Chairman of the Municipal Law Forum.
